GRIT : The Fuel Behind Every Remarkable Life

GRIT.

Have you ever wondered why some people rise from nothing and rise up every time they fall down, build empires, while others, with all the resources in the world, never quite get there and always in the blame game.

It’s not always intelligence.
It’s not always talent.
It’s not even luck.

It’s something quieter, deeper, and much more powerful.

It’s unwavering GRIT.

Yes, grit —that unshakable fire in the belly, that inner refusal to quit, the invisible engine that keeps turning when everything else says, “Stop.” Let’s take a deep dive into what grit really is, how it works, and most importantly—how you can build it.

What is GRIT?

Grit is not a motivational quote.
It’s not a mood.
It’s a mindset.

Angela Duckworth, the psychologist who made grit a household word, defined it as:

“Passion and perseverance for long-term goals.”

But I like to simplify it even further for all of us who are hustling out there:

GRIT = Staying power + Soul power.

It’s about waking up every day and choosing to show up—especially on days when motivation is missing, energy is low, and no one is clapping for you. It’s about playing the long game. While the world celebrates speed, grit celebrates sustainability.

Why GRIT Matters Now More Than Ever

We live in a “microwave” world—everything is instant. Instant likes, instant noodles, instant promotions (or at least, that’s what social media wants you to believe) and INSTANT GRATIFICATION.

But life-changing success is slow-cooked. And grit is the only thing that keeps the flame on when the applause dies, the novelty fades, and the grind begins.

Grit is what made:

  • Sachin Tendulkar spend hours in the nets even after scoring centuries.
  • J.K. Rowling keep writing despite twelve publishers rejecting her.
  • MS Dhoni train relentlessly, even after becoming captain.
  • Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw break stereotypes and create a biotech giant in a male-dominated industry.

These people didn’t win because they had a lucky break.
They won because they refused to break.

The 4 Pillars of GRIT

Let’s break it down—Jimmy Jain style—into four powerful components that make up the anatomy of grit. Remember this as G.R.I.T.:

G – Goals that set your soul on fire

What do you really want to achieve in life ? Grit begins when your goal becomes bigger than your excuses. If you fake passion  the grit without passion becomes a punishment.

What’s the one goal that gives you goosebumps?
What’s the dream that keeps you up in the heart when the world is quiet?

If you’re struggling to stick with something, maybe the problem isn’t your motivation—it’s your mission. Align your life with what matters. And suddenly, discipline won’t feel like a burden.

Ask Yourself: “Would I chase this even if I wasn’t paid for it?”

R – Resilience in the face of resistance

Gritty people understand that failure is a part of growing up . They expect it and they build shock absorbers for it. Setbacks are not signals to stop. They are signs you’re moving.
Let me say this straight: If you’ve never failed, you’re playing too safe.

The best CEOs, artists, athletes, and changemakers? They’ve been through hell. But here’s the catch—they didn’t set up camp there.

They used pain as protein, they turned breakdowns into breakthroughs.

Your Inner Practice: After every failure, ask: “What is this teaching me that success never could?”

I – Integrity with your own promise

Grit is about looking at yourself in the mirror and there is a voice echoing inside which says, “Try Me”

Grit becomes a personal journey and isn’t about proving it to others. It’s about proving it to yourself.

Every time you say, “I’ll do this,” and you actually do it—something magical happens. You build inner trust. You feels a positive surge and your confidence grows leaps and bounds and that becomes your foundation.

You know what erodes grit?
Chronic continuous self-criticism and self-abandonment. When you keep breaking promises to yourself in small ways, you lose your own respect. And grit can’t grow where self-trust is broken.

Micro-Challenge: Make one promise to yourself every morning—and honour it no matter what. That’s how personal power is born.

T – Tenacity through time

This is the test, the test of time, the test of your character. Talent shines early but tenacity lasts.

Tenacity means:

  • Showing up when it’s boring.
  • Practicing when it’s not glamorous.
  • Doing the reps when no one’s watching.

You don’t have to be extraordinary. You just have to be consistent.

The Jimmy Rule: Show up daily for 15 minutes more than you want to quit. Those 15 minutes make champions.

How to Build GRIT (Even if You’ve Never Had It)

You don’t have to be born gritty. It’s not a gene or an inborn trait,  It’s a gym.

Here are 5 daily “Grit Workouts”:

  1. Cold Shower Thinking – Step into a cold shower, feel the resistance, and do it anyway. A metaphor for life.
  2. One Hard Thing a Day – Choose one task you’ve been avoiding and just do it. No drama. Just execution.
  3. Journal the Journey – Write one paragraph every night: What did I conquer today, emotionally or mentally?
  4. Celebrate the Boring Wins – Praise yourself not for success, but for showing up. Track consistency, not outcomes.
  5. Find Your Tribe – Grit multiplies in the company of dreamers, doers, and disrupters. Be in rooms that stretch you.

Grit in Real Life: My Own Story

Let me tell you a secret. There were days when no one showed up, no business tricked in Days when no calls happened. Days when self-doubt was screaming louder than faith.

But I remembered why I began.

I remembered the young professional trying to find meaning. The leader losing hope. The small-town boy who had a big dream and no roadmap.

So I made an extra call, reached the prospective clients more diligently. Delivered another session without looking at the pay cheque, built one more bridge.

And slowly, life responded.

Not all at once. But one meaningful step at a time.

Your Life is Waiting for Your Grit

Hey you, who is reading this , Yes, you, I am talking with you , My friend, I don’t know where you are in life right now. Maybe you’re winning. Maybe you’re wounded. Maybe both.

But this I know:

You are stronger than your worst day.
You are braver than your loudest fear.
And you are more powerful than you’ve ever been told.

Grit is not about never falling.
It’s about rising anyway—with blood on your knees and purpose in your eyes.

So go ahead, build your grit.

And remember, the world may not see you now. But if you keep going, they won’t be able to ignore you later. Be Gritty be who are meant to be.
